Meclay has long been committed to Sustainability. We take pride in the fact that all our raw materials are derived from natural resources, and are either renewable or recyclable. Our manufacturing processes and business practices are also crafted to reduce Meclay’s carbon footprint. Our journey accelerated in 2013 with launching the ‘Meclay Sustainability Goals’ Initiative and becoming Pakistan’s first self-practicing sustainable group. We continue to make significant progress towards our goal of contributing to a sustainable tomorrow for our communities.
'GREEN OFFICE’ INITIATIVE
Moving further towards the roadmap of ‘Meclay Sustainability Goals’, we began the ‘Green Office’ Initiative in all our offices worldwide to pursuing our goal of overcoming challenges of environmental sustainability. The implementation of this program allowed Meclay to reap benefits from newly motivated and environmentally aware personnel, and an improved corporate image, besides reduction in overall carbon emissions. The key focus areas of the ‘Green Office’ Initiative include behavior modification of employees, office illumination and lighting, office supplies and equipment, reduction in paper consumption, waste management and reduction in water use.
'GREEN FACTORY’ INITIATIVE
The ‘Green Factory’ Initiative has had a huge impact on the group’s overall environmental footprint. It was first implemented in our Personal Care Products Manufacturing Facility in Karachi and then introduced in all other manufacturing facilities. Factory Employees in all our manufacturing facilities globally attended various awareness sessions and were encouraged to implement their learning in their day-to-day jobs and functions within the factory premises. New SOPs were drafted and implemented within four months after training. Moreover, Six Sigma Initiative was undertaken by the group in all of its manufacturing facilities to reduce power consumption.

Our sustainability strategy responds to the key challenges facing our world, seizing the opportunities, mitigating the risks and balancing the needs of stakeholders. Sustainability at Meclay is more than achieving excellence within our own operations. Our sustainability focus extends to our global supply chain, to our communities, to our role in helping diversify world economy and to the development of the ‘sustainability leaders’ of tomorrow.
Early in the process, we recognized that our employees are central to the success of our sustainability initiatives. A wide-reaching training program has helped employees to understand that sustainability affects everything we do, from operating safely and efficiently to treating people with respect. Already, 80 percent of employees have received training, which is important in building the culture we need to ensure that sustainability is fully integrated into our strategies and operations.
We take great pride in our efforts to promote safe, efficient and ethical business practices and to positively impact lives in the regions where we operate. We believe by integrating sustainability throughout Meclay Group Companies around the world, we can strengthen our Organization’s roots and contribute to making our world a better place to live for future generations.
We will continuously strive to ensure that responsible care is implemented whenever possible by sharing green profits together with our stakeholders without sacrificing the equilibrium of nature through integration of green systems, methods and standards into our business strategy and operations.
ECOLOGICALLY SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Meclay recognizes the social and ecological challenges that face humanity today are as integral to its business as are economic drivers and therefore the triple bottom line of economic, environmental and social good forms an essential part of our approach to responsible Corporate Citizenship. There is a direct and indirect impact on the environment through the operational demands of business on natural resources viz. energy, water & other inputs in our process. Hence Meclay recognizes its responsibility to assess and minimize the ecological impact of its business activities and protecting ecosystems upon which the whole humanity depends.
‘Environmental Custodianship’ and ‘Corporate Citizenship’ are integral parts of “Spirit of Meclay”, the foundation of Meclay Core Values. The three cornerstones of our policy are “Compliance, Custodianship and Commitment” implying (i) compliance with environmental regulations (ii) responsible custodianship for our customers, suppliers, investors and employees and (iii) commitment to the principles of the triple bottom line – Planet, People and Profit–through our actions within and outside Meclay. These are explained in detail in the following driving principles:
- Compliance in letter and spirit: Meclay believes that environmental regulations have a critical role to play as catalysts for sustainable development. Meclay Companies will comply in both letter and spirit with all environmental and related laws, regulations, codes of practice & directives, as relevant and applicable to us in every geography that we operate in.
- Integration with business strategy: We will integrate internal ecological programs into our core business strategy and the corresponding processes of planning, goal-setting measurement and continuous review.
- Customer Stewardship: We will engage collaboratively with our customers identifying and providing appropriate ‘sustainable’ products, solutions and services, which will help the customers to reduce their ecological footprint.
- Leadership Commitment: Meclay’s Leadership commits itself to the principles and demands of being an ecologically sustainable organization by provisioning adequately for the investment of necessary resources and by engaging employees continuously in the realization of our common ecological vision.
At Meclay, we have developed our own brand of corporate sustainability. Our approach has been proactive and driven by the desire to create a symbiotic relationship among our business practices, the stakeholders we directly impact, the countries where we operate and the planet we live on. For Meclay, profit is the reward for doing what’s best for this world, as responsible employers and dutiful taxpayers. Meclay’s commitment to corporate social responsibility is a value that permeates all levels of our business, inculcated by an enabling culture that has been conscientiously developed across the organization.
Sustainability strategy of Meclay is centered on our triple bottom line approach with a focus that goes beyond profit to encompass the people directly or indirectly connected to us as well as the planet we live in. Our motivation for adopting the triple bottom line approach is simple: in modern times, no company can ignore the fact that its operations have an impact not just on the welfare of its shareholders, but also on the lives of the people in its host communities, as well as the environment of the planet. We strongly believe that the interests of our broader stakeholder community, as well as the environment, are as important as the interests of our shareholders.
By ensuring that our business model is geared towards creating inclusive value, Meclay creates opportunity for a far wider community than our direct suppliers and customers: we help fulfill the economic promise of the nation as a whole. Even as the group’s businesses were reorganized under a holding company structure in 2010, we created the Meclay Foundation, a non-profit entity designed to manage and sustain our partnership with our stakeholders, as well as the several government and non-government organizations with which we collaborate in order to make investments in the needs of our host communities.
MECLAY'S ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
We wish to ensure that the policies and practices developed and practiced by Meclay to ensure that they operate in a sustainable manner, not only address short-term requirements of operational efficiency but incorporate a much longer-term perspective of environmental and social custodianship for future generations. A fundamental premise underlying such an approach is that we fully engage with multiple stakeholders whose viewpoints and interests are considered and incorporated into our vision, policy and practices. A well-articulated environmental policy can serve as a catalyst for change. Meclay’s Environmental Policy (ZEP) has been articulated with this vision in mind. The backbone of the Meclay’s Environmental Policy (ZEP) is comprehensive Environmental Management System (EMS). The policy is already fully applicable to all associated companies of Meclay.
Meclay’s internal footprint: Meclay will strive to reduce and minimize the ecological footprint of its internal operations. Our focus will be on the four dimensions, viz. GHG (Greenhouse Gas) footprint reduction, Water Efficiency, Sustainable Waste management, and preserving and enhancing Biodiversity in our group companies. We will do this through a three pronged approach of:
(i) Instituting robust processes in measuring and monitoring our impact,
(ii) Deploying appropriate clean technologies, and
(iii) Engaging all employees of Meclay in continuous green improvements at the workplace.
Stakeholder Inclusiveness: Meclay recognizes that the cause of ecological sustainability requires the collective focus of multiple stakeholders. A key cornerstone of our sustainability process will be to partner and collaborate with multiple stakeholders on common programs-
(i) Working with our suppliers towards the goal of a responsible and sustainable supply chain
(ii) Engaging with government in influencing environmental policies and regulations and
(iii) Partnering the academia, NGOs and communities on the larger goals pertaining to sustainable communities, cities and regions.
Transparency: Meclay commits itself to being transparent about its sustainability goals and progress with all its stake holders. We will do this through multiple forums of reporting and disclosure as well as on-demand requirements from our stakeholders. We will drive the implementation of our policy through widespread awareness and concrete actions, while being open to continual improvements. We believe that the policy serves a strong foundation for our goal of a seamless integration of marketplace, workplace, environment and community concerns with Meclay’s business operations in order to support the larger goal of sustainable development.
